HammerSpace
About What We’re Doing

Hammerspace is a popular trope used in animation; a metaphysical warehouse where objects can be drawn from and manifest ex nihilo. The nebulous space from which Bugs Bunny withdraws an over-sized mallet is the same where Master Chief Officer John-117  from  the video game Halo retains his arsenal of weaponry. This notion-that time and space can be folded into a pocket dimension only to be utilized when necessary- is an apt metaphor for the HammerSpace project’s philosophy regarding the implementation of an experimental art space.

We’re excited to invite various artists to present experimental work in a planned series of  pop-up exhibitions in New York City that resist a clear curatorial concept; raw space for raw ideas. Hopefully, this creative collaboration will provide a platform for each participating artist to directly engage the  surrounding community with spontaneous expression. In conjunction with each show, a unique publication/portfolio will be featured. The publication/portfolio will be available in editions of twenty, and will include material from each artist as well as text/ideas pertinent to the show. Each artist will then have the opportunity to invite another artist of their choice to participate in the following HammerSpace exhibition.
